How to Calculate Your SSD Benefits

SSD functions as an insurance program for disabled workers who paid into the Social Security system each year via income taxes, and benefits are based on the amount of credits—or quarters of coverage—you pay into the system. The amount of income required to earn one credit is adjusted regularly as average wages increase, and a maximum of four credits can be earned per year. To find the most up-to-date SSD credit income requirements, visit the SSA’s Quarter of Coverage page.

The number of credits needed to qualify for benefits varies depending on your age at the time of becoming disabled:

  • Under Age 24
You generally must have worked at least 1.5 of the three years before your alleged onset date (AOD)—or the date you became disabled.
  • Between Ages 24-30
You must have earned credits for half the time between age 21 and your AOD.
  • Age 31 and Older
You must have earned at least 20 credits in the 10 years before your AOD. The exact number of credits you need to qualify for benefits increases until age 62.

The SSA offers benefits calculators you can use to determine approximate SSD benefit amounts, however if your claim is approved, the actual amount of benefits you get may vary.

Healthcare Benefits and SSD

If you’re approved for Social Security Disability benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare after receiving benefits for two years. Your Medicare coverage will include:

  • Hospital Insurance (Part A)
Medicare Part A is free and provides coverage for inpatient hospital bills and certain types of follow-up care.
  • Medical Insurance (Part B)
Medicare Part B is optional and requires you to pay a monthly premium. This coverage helps cover the costs of outpatient medical care and other medical services.
